A review arguing the need for a developmental dual-axis approach for hormone-behavior assocaitions

What is it about?

Studies on associations of hormones and behaviors during adolescence have mixed conclusions. We review how stress- and puberty-related hormones work together within individuals and how considering the combined role of both classes of hormones may improve our understanding of adolescents' physical and psychological development. We also review future directions for this field of research,.

Why is it important?

This publication synthesizes the developmental research on hormone-behavior associations for cortisol, testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone. We review theory and evidence for how these hormones interact in the body, and importantly, contrast how they may be expected to interact in association with behavior in adolescence versus adulthood. The developmental focus is a novel addition to the existing theory.
