What is it about?

This is a study of the effect of maternal depression on infant cortisol production across three groups of mothers exhibiting differential patterns of displaying the ailment.

Why is it important?

It should l be noted that even if infants of mothers with comorbid depression and anxiety had higher cortisol levels from morning to bedtime compared to the other groups at 6 and 12 months, no such group differences were observed at 18 months.

Perspectives

It is noteworthy that infants seem to undergo changes in their stress regulation capacites and/or that maternal coping strategies may change some time during the first half of the second year of life.
