What is it about?

Understanding the geometries of sandbodies is important to understand flow and transport of water or oil through the subsurface. By making use of physical and numerical models we can relate actual processes to the dimensions of their deposits and their internal erosion/ deposition surfaces. Our experimental and numerical results from earlier studies are here combined to get a prediction of the three-dimensional meander belt sandbody.

Why is it important?

Here we demonstrate how geometries of mender belt sand bodies can be predicted by using information of the geometries of meandering rivers at the surface. This is needed to make better assumptions for regions where limited subsurface information is available.
