What is it about?

Patients discontinuing their antidepressant medication (ADM) during inpatient psychotherapy did not have inferior outcomes in treatment compared to those patients who kept using ADM. The lack of added effect of ADM to psychotherapy could indicate patients had developed tolerance and/or resistance against the prophylactic effects of medication.

Why is it important?

Psychotherapy alone could in some instances be an alternative to continued combined treatment. Our results suggest the need to carefully assess whether ongoing use of antidepressant medication is still beneficial for patients when entering psychotherapy.
