What is it about?
Materials and colors are influential elements in interior architecture. Their existence might contribute many different aspects of experience and perception. The article is about free-associations of materials, material pairs, colors and color pairs in interiors. The experimental setting was used to investigate free-association of these interior architecture elements, with 192 participants, in order to understand their meanings. In the experimental setting; fabric, timber, and plasterboard, as materials; red, green, and white, as colors, were selected according to their surface properties, the wide range of usage and production process.

Why is it important?
The results contribute to understanding associations of materials, material pairs, colours and colour pairs in interiors. It is interesting to note that material pairs have less affective associations when they are compared with their single materials. Moreover, color pairs tend to have more diverse meanings than material pairs. The findings could be beneficial for researchers, scholars and professionals in design disciplines who aim to probe experience and perception of these interior architecture elements.
