What is it about?

It has been long viewed the medial septum a kind of interface station from the hypothalamus and brainstem to the hippocampus, as such is one important factor in driving hippocampal theta rhythm. In this paper, we report that medial septum also send descending projections which arrive to the nucleus incertus. Thus it must b3e viewed the system as a bi-directional pathway, and the theta rhythm is what emerge from this up and down flow of information.

Why is it important?

The consideration of the flow of information between the hippocampus, septum and nucleus incertus as a biderectional pathway changes the view of the system from an ascending modulatory view to a more integrative system.
