What is it about?

Women with PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syindrome (PHTS) are offered breast cancer surveillance due to an increased breast cancer lifetime risk. Surveillance guidelines are, however, expert-opinion based due to the lack of data. We aimed to understand the effectiveness of BC surveillance in women with PHTS.

Why is it important?

In our study, we show that annual breast cancer surveillance with breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) starting at age 25 years is effective in detecting early-stage cancers in this under recognised population.

Perspectives

Working on this study was an exciting and fulfilling experience. Our unique results have drawn the attention of many clinicians and scientists to the unsolved question of how effective breast cancer surveillance is in women with PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome. Moreover, it also led to sponsors contacting me in order to donate on research in this topic.
