What is it about?
Carbon dioxide is the end product of combustion. Apart from the fact that it is a green house gas, It is not very useful for chemical transformations.

Why is it important?
Removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is an important goal but not readily accessible. The conversion of carbon dioxide to fuel is economically unviable unless it is aided by solar energy. Under these circumstances, the next best alternative is to make it more reactive through a reaction that is nearly thermoneutral. We believe that the reaction we have described here is as close to the goal as one can get!
Perspectives
This approach has not been explored by scientists with enough seriousness. I believe that one cannot defeat thermodynamics. Converting carbon dioxide to a fuel, either methanol or methane is not going to be cheap. If we cannot use sunlight to drive this reaction, the next best activity is to use molecules which are energy rich to convert carbon dioxide to useful molecule.
