This article reports the synthesis, luminescence, electrochemistry and computational calculations on a series of meridional and facial isomers of heteroleptic tris-cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes containing heteroaromatic ligands.

Why is it important?

Photophysical and photochemical studies on octahedral Pt(IV) complexes are very limited. In this article, we uncover the factors that govern the luminescence of tris-cyclometalated platinum(IV) complexes, which are a new class of triplet emitters with very long radiative lifetimes.

Perspectives

Although the photophysics and photochemistry of square-planar Pt(II) complexes has been the subject of considerable research efforts, related studies on octahedral Pt(IV) complexes are very limited. This is surprising in view of the overwhelming number of studies carried out on complexes of other d6 ions, such as Re(I), Ru(II), Os(II) and Ir(III). This study, together with a previous one, gives insight into the factors that govern the unique properties of tris-cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes.
