What is it about?

This work is about a technique that increases the number of platelets in patients who have low counts of these elements. It is very common that patients experience low platelets counts along their disease and disease treatment period. The procedure used in this work, called partial spleen embolization, addressed exactly this issue, implementing a fast and secure solution for it.

Why is it important?

First of all because it is very common to see patients experiencing low platelets count at some point during their disease, so the problem we are addressing is a very frequent one. Second that this work focused in a minimally way to prevent that patients’ platelets count would keep reducing and helped them to rise faster and thru a safe approach.

Perspectives

This work does not report a new procedure. Instead it brings a new and a better way to do an old procedure with much more pleasant results. Patients almost invariably suffer with a decrease in the platelets count along their lives. With this minimally invasive approach it is possible to raise their number thru a very tolerable medical procedure without even keeping the patient over night at the hospital. Besides that it is not an expensive procedure and thus potentially allowing it to be offered in most health clinics and hospitals.
