What is it about?

The recyclability of engineering structures and sandwich components is prevented by the use of different material layers, which are difficult to separate after they reach their end of life. Reducing the number of material layers is key for enabling recycling and transitioning to a circular economy. Energy infrastructure often presents this problem, lowering their sustainablity score. In this work the foamability of Polybutene-1 is studied, as a first step towards the manuacturing of district heating pre-insulated pipes out of a single material.

Why is it important?

This research tackles: -the replacement of polyurethane foam. The synthesis of polyurethane requires di-isocyanates, which are highly toxic and have been recently restricted by the European Commission. -the manufacturing of a multifunctional sandwich structure out of a single recyclable material, allowing for easy recycling.
