What is it about?

Polymer composite are being widely used to replace metals in many critical areas. Hence it is of utmost importance to study the mechanical behavior of polymeric composites. Nanofillers have now emerged as the ultimate reinforcing agents for polymers.Mechanical behavior of unsaturated polyester ) at various concentrations of amino modified kaolin clay are evaluated. Amino modification is used for making the nanoclay surface hydrophobic

Why is it important?

Nanocomposite based on polyester resin has been reported to exhibit improved mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. Much of the work in this area has been done on Montmorillonite and silica based composites. No known reports are available on composites with cheaper and more easily available kaolin clay as the nano reinforcement, especially with respect to mechanical properties.

Perspectives

Scientific community will be highly appreciative of applications of sparingly used kaolin clay with unsaturated polyesters and the resulting improvement in properties upon very low loading. The low cost and easy availability of kaolinite clay compared to Montmorillonite Clay will be much appealing to the research community working on polymer composites.
