What is it about?

Cocrystal cluster enables the synergistic process involving C(sp3)-H bond activation by photogenerated holes and further reactions by singlet oxygen (1O2), which cannot be efficiently achieved by the doped cluster. Remarkably, the cocrystal Ti4Fe1 cluster achieves efficient and selective oxidation of hydrocarbons (C5 to C16) into aldehydes and ketones with a conversion rate up to 12,860 μmol·g−1·h−1, 5 times higher than that of Fe-doped Ti3Fe1 cluster.

Why is it important?

we have rationally regulated the charge dynamics of crystalline heterometallic polyoxotitanium clusters for efficient and selective hydrocarbon oxidation through controlling the assembly mode of Felll species. We proven that cocrystal {FeCl4}- in Ti4Fe1 can work as an electron acceptor to enhance energy transfer, facilitating the production of highly active 1O2, which cannot be efficiently achieved by the doped Ti3Fe1 cluster.

Perspectives

Our work provides insights into rationally tailoring the electronic structure and energy transfer of polyoxometalate clusters, and demonstrates their potential application in photocatalytic aerobic oxidation.
