What is it about?

Antiepileptic treatment of brain tumor patients mainly depends on the individual physician`s choice rather than on well-defined predictive factors. The study investigated and quantified the risk factors (predictors) that are associated with the occurrence of seizures in patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors.

Why is it important?

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are not recommended as a primary seizure prophylaxis in brain tumor patients, nevertheless many physicians routinely use AEDs to overcome the potential risks related to seizures. Based on the identified risk factors we developed prognostic scores to enable the calculation of the individual seizure risk of a patient to identify high-risk patients, who might benefit from antiepileptic seizure prophylaxis.

Perspectives

The quantification of the predictors of distinct events enable the calculation of individual risks (chances) for the occurrence of these events. We identified and quantified the predictors of preoperative and early-postoperative seizures and formulated models to estimate patients individual seizure risks. These models will help physicians to guide their decisions regarding primary seizure prophylaxis in daily practice based on patients individual risk to develop seizures but not on general recommendations.
