Who produces and consumes teff in Ethiopia?

What is it about?

Teff is a major cereal of Ethiopia. To ensure the availability of teff in the domestic market, the government of Ethiopia baned teff export. Our study demonstrates that teff is produced by rural resource-poor farmers but consume by urban and economically affluent households. This study thus indicates that the teff export ban may not bring fruitful results for the resource-poor farmers.

Why is it important?

Teff is the major cereal of Ethiopia, and also a major crop of the country. It is important to ensure market price and therefore the income of the teff producing resource-poor farmers of Ethiopia. This study indirectly indicates that delinking from the global value chain by banning teff export may not bring benefits to the teff producing farmers of Ethiopia.
