What is it about?

We analyse the relationship between consumer's trust and risk perceptions about two animal diseases (BSE in Canada, U.S. and Japan and chronic wasting disease in Canada and U.S.). We include both generalized trust in people and trust in food agents (government, farmers, retailers and manufacturers).

Why is it important?

Trust has been shown to be a driver of consumer perceptions and behaviour in other context. In this paper, results show that trust is important in driving consumer perceptions about BSE and CWD but the effects vary across countries and between the two diseases.

Perspectives

The research is important because it shows that trust influences consumer's risk perceptions about the two animal diseases. Therefore, monitoring people's generalized trust in people and trust in food agents might help in predicting their perceptions about similar animal diseases in the future. This information also helps in risk communication, risk management and policy making.
