What is it about?

Hannibal led the Carthaginians in their greatest war against Rome, from 218 to 201 BCE. Despite great initial victories, his invasion of Italy was a failure and he was finally defeated by the Romans in North Africa itself.

Why is it important?

Hannibal was admired as one of the ancient world's greatest generals, and his tactics of surprise and envelopment of enemy armies inspired later commanders as recently as 1991.

Perspectives

Hannibal is widely misunderstood, both in broad terms and in details (he did not, for instance, cross the Alps in winter; he was not a black African nor a ruthless barbarian). He needs to be properly understood.
