What is it about?
This chapter humbly follows those of Lester Salamon in previous editions of the Renz/Herman Handbook. I try to lay out macro trends in the sector today; while I build on Salamon's work, I believe that I reach slightly different conclusions about where we are and where we are going.

Why is it important?
This chapter in the Handbook has traditionally set the 'macro' stage for students of nonprofit management. It attempts to take the data available to researchers and boil it down for future (and current) practitioners.
Perspectives
It's an honor to be invited to contribute this chapter as I have deep respect for what Lester Salamon did in previous editions of the Handbook. I hope that the chapter is effective in starting conversations about where the sector is and where it might be going in the United States.
