What is it about?
The Treaty of Kanagawa (1854) opened diplomatic relations between the United States and Japan, ending the latter's policy of isolation. A product of gunboat diplomacy, it was the first of the unequal treaties that limited Japan's sovereignty in its relations with Western nations.
