What is it about?

Hyperlinks can be viewed as the backbone of the relationships and hierarchies in a digital information ecosystem of which journalism is one social institution among many others. As a tool in everyday journalistic practice, hyperlinks have generally been understood as having citational and commercial functions with the potential to both support and threaten journalism. Scholarly ways of approaching hyperlinks started out with traditionally available methods like interviews, surveys, and content analyses but have since moved on to network analyses and computer‐assisted content analyses. With recent developments in journalism practice and studies, and with an increased emphasis on sharing, networks, and media ecologies, hyperlinks are likely to increase in importance.
