What is it about?

In the past two decades, French documentary film has experienced unprededented growth and popularity. Established filmmakers have released new works; new filmmakers have risen to prominence in the field; a broad range of new subjects have emerged; filmmakers have continued to develop new forms; and some French documentaries have enjoyed an unprecedented level of commercial success. This chapter provides a broad overview of contemporary French documentary, with particular attention to evolving definitions of documentary modes; recent developments in the documentary film market in France; important filmmakers, subjects, and developments in form and style; and the impact of digital media on the future of the field.
