Perspectives

Decades of research support the safe, effective care of NPs in diverse settings, yet inconsistent state regulation limits the full deployment of these proven clinicians during a time of critical healthcare access in America. A diverse pool of inter-professional clinicians is needed to most effectively meet the needs of consumers in the evolving complexities in contemporary healthcare systems. Nurse educators, policy leaders, stakeholders, regulators and legislators must pay attention to the critical role of skill acquisition for new clinicians, remove regulatory barriers to enable full deployment of practicing clinicians and recognize the value and need for mentoring of new NPs as they transition to the workforce to meet the growing needs of consumers.
