What is it about?

This system can measure automatically velocity in natural rivers by using autonomous boat robot. The principle is very unique. The river velocity is evaluated from propulsion force, with which the robot remains by it self in the stream. The measurement accuracy was also examined by comparison with existing velocimetry.

Why is it important?

Direct measurements for river velocity is crucial, because such data is required for environmental management, prediction of scouring / sedimentation. But it is generally hard with existing devices. Thus, we will propose new devise.

Perspectives

We are very happy for this article to be published and hope it will contribute to many readers. This suggest a new method for automated and safety measurement of discharge in river stream. Although we are still in first step, we believe this technique will evolve for practical use.
