What is it about?

We explore a paradox in radio spectrum engineering: By doubling the spectrum resource used on selected radiocommunications links, we can actually reduce the overall spectrum resource required for a telecommunications network. This study rests on an understanding of inequalities in radiocommunications including those associated with different radio equipment types.

Why is it important?

Radio spectrum is increasingly under pressure from both existing and emerging services. Spectrum engineers involved in frequency assignment work will increasingly look towards ideas for using the spectrum resource more efficiently. In this study, we show how heuristics that analyse interference in telecommunications networks and select the radio equipment deployed in the networks can deliver some significant efficiencies.
