What is it about?

This work is to develop a process-based lake biogeochemical model that fits the needs of estimating methane emissions from arctic lakes.

Why is it important?

Recent field studies have shown that methane emissions from thermokarst (thaw) arctic lakes, previously ignored, could be considerably large and sensitive to global warming. That means global governments might need to put more money to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from other areas if this source is verified. This model is developed as a tool for the scientific community and policy makers to understand the magnitude of the methane emissions from arctic lakes.

Perspectives

This model tool will be made freely available in the future and right now the authors can help employ it for co-authorship working. And more emission data is welcome to provide to further constrain it.
