What is it about?

Measuring the AMOC using XBT data requires several approximations and is subjective to opeational constraints. We explore some of the uncertainties of this methodology such as salinity estimation, temporal and spatial sampling, reference velocity etc.

Why is it important?

We provided recommendations to reduce error in XBT estimates of the AMOC, for example, by increasing the sampling in the boundaries, required 15 years of quarterly measurements to converge to a true seasonal cycle, salinity estimates should account for seasonality, and a reference level of 800 m is a good approximation for the level of no motion in the South Atlantic.

The XB transect at 34.5S is using some of the recommendations provided by this paper.
