What is it about?

A computer model predicts that in the Ross Sea, the ocean's least human-impacted region, ice concentrations will decrease in the future, and drive drastic alterations in the food web. Such decreases will likely negatively impact the immense populations of penguins and whales found there.

Why is it important?

Climate change will greatly alter today's environment in all areas, including the Antarctic. The changes in oceanography and food webs are complex and difficult to predict, but it is clear that in the next century these changes will be immense.
