What is it about?

The objective of this study is to assess the deep organic carbon pool of the Yedoma region to reduce quantitative uncertainty concerning thaw-vulnerable permafrost carbon. We quantified the deep organic carbon pool based of the Yedoma permafrost region to 83 Gt for Yedoma deposits and to 128 Gt for thermokarst deposits. The total Yedoma region 211Gt is a substantial amount of thaw-vulnerable OC that must be accounted for in global models.

Why is it important?

Because >50% of the modeling-scenario spread in permafrost organic carbon climate response is caused by uncertainties in the permafrost carbon pool size, better size estimates are essential.
