What is it about?

Three types of delayed external feedback in semiconductor lasers are theoretically analyzed within one overall framework and in quite some detail, i.e. conventional, filtered and phase conjugated feedback. Several implications for the dynamical behavior are presented and discussed.

External optical feedback can have a devastating influence on the behavior of a semiconductor laser, but can also be beneficial in applications where it is used to control the behavior of semiconductor lasers. Therefore, it is crucially important to understand the underlying physical principles of optical feedback in these lasers.
