What is it about?
The boiling point of water depends on the atmospheric pressure. As weather changes, so will the boiling point. We report observations of this effect during the passage of Storm Ciarán in early November 2023

Why is it important?
The boiling point of water is important for some heating processes , and is thought to affect the taste of tea. Storm Ciarán passed over the populated south-east of the UK in the early morning, possibly leading to some sub-optimal breakfast experiences.
Perspectives
Episodes of low atmospheric pressure are usually short-lived, unlike episodes of high pressure, which can persist. Hence the opportunity to measure the boiling point of water accurately had to be grasped quickly, which we did. This allowed us to compare the effect on reducing the boiling point with a previous period of high pressure, when the boiling point increased.
