What is it about?
Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Although treatment with progesterone may help to prevent preterm birth, additional interventions are needed. We performed this study to determine whether placement of a pessary around the cervix would prevent preterm birth. Studies to date on effectiveness of the pessary show conflicting results. Our study showed that the pessary was not effective in preventing preterm birth in our high risk population.
