What is it about?
Ultrasound scanning is routinely used during pregnancy to identify babies who appear to have abnormal brain development; however fetal magnetic resonance imaging has recently been shown to improve the diagnostic accuracy for detecting brain abnormalities. In this paper we have looked at the role of fetal MRI in diagnosing ventriculomegaly. Our data suggest that any pregnant woman carrying a fetus that has been diagnosed with ventriculomegaly as the only brain abnormality on USS should be offered a fetal MRI to provide further information.
