This article is about examining the impact of removing price controls and an import monopoly on rice prices and self-sufficiency levels in Malaysia and also exploring policy alternatives that can reduce the trade-off between rice prices and self-sufficiency levels as a result of market liberalization in Malaysia.

Why is it important?
The findings show that paddy import strategies can help stabilize rice prices, achieve 100% self-sufficiency in white rice, and create new job and business opportunities in Malaysia's relatively poor regions.
Perspectives
I hope this article can suggest a new policy alternative for the Malaysian government to enhance the national food security and revitalize the agricultural sectors in rural areas.
