Eliminating Routine Gastric Residual Checks for Nurses
What is it about?
This article addresses the question regarding whether gastric residual checks are necessary on a routine basis. A change project was conducted on a Sub Acute unit resulting in the elimination of routine gastric residual checks, and saving hours of nursing time.
Why is it important?
Evidence based practice is considered valuable in nursing. This study looked at a traditional practice that takes up nursing time and includes expenses for equipment. There is a need for further research in this area, and it is the hope of the authors that others will take on this challenge.
