What is it about?
The results of this study showed that the use of P. atlantica resin or Saqez (in Persian) as an ointment in comparison with placebo, significantly reduced pain and joint stiffness and caused a significant improvement in the physical function in the elderly with knee osteoarthritis.

Why is it important?
P. atlantica gum, composed of phenolic compounds, such as Masticadienonic acid, Masticadienolic acid, Moralic acid, and Triterpenes entails anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and also the source of pain in osteoarthritis is the extra-articular structures rather than the intra-articular cartilage structures (because articular cartilage lacks nerves). Regarding this, the form and route of administration (topical ointment) of the investigated drug positively affected the efficacy of this agent in reducing clinical symptoms, joint pain, and joint stiffness in the subjects as a complementary medicine.
