What characterizes the subset of MarR family transcription factors that bind urate

What is it about?

We summarize the sequence features that characterize MarR family transcription factors that bind urate. We also identify bacterial species in which these proteins are encoded.

Why is it important?

Urate is produced by host cells when they defend themselves against an infection. Urate-responsive transcription factors can use this diffusible signal to control virulence gene expression.
