What is it about?
The JPD method of creating indices has many advantages over more traditional methods (e.g., factor analysis, item response theory), but calculating the JPD itself can be very time-consuming. We identified 2 much simpler ways to estimate the JPD and compared them to the "gold standard" method of estimating JPD. The simpler methods returned scores that were extremely close to those derived from the gold standard method.

Why is it important?
These simplifications make it much easier to develop JPD scales and indices. If you can run a regression equation, you can create a JPD index!
Perspectives
I felt it was extremely important that we simplified the JPD method to the point that someone without advanced statistical knowledge (like me) could apply and use it. I feel like we succeeded with this paper and hope others will give the JPD method a test drive!
