What is it about?

AA2024 is an aluminum alloy whose microstructure contains corrosion-promoting cathodic particles. We have shown that the addition of V improves the corrosion resistance of AA2024 alloy by depositing V on the cathodic particles and reducing their ability to sustain large cathodic currents.

Why is it important?

The effect of vanadium on the corrosion and hardness of aluminum alloys is not yet well understood. In this article, we discuss the possible mechanisms of improved corrosion performance due to the addition of vanadium. Our results show that the alloy AA2024 could acquire the ability of repassivation by modification with vanadium.

Perspectives

I hope this article will be of interest not only to corrosion scientists, but also to the additive manufacturing and powder metallurgy communities working on improved feedstocks and raw materials.
