What is it about?

This research paper reviewed all the existing scientific studies on rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, performed as part of gender transition. The goal was to understand what we currently know about the outcomes of this procedure and to highlight what we still need to learn.

Why is it important?

The review found that patients are generally very satisfied with their results and the surgery has low rates of complications or need for revision, similar to cosmetic nose surgery. However, the review also identified significant gaps in knowledge. Specifically, the questionnaires used to measure patient satisfaction have not been properly tested for this specific patient group, and the experiences of patients from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds are largely missing from the research. In short, while early evidence shows this surgery is safe and effective, more tailored research is needed to fully understand and optimize care for all transgender individuals seeking this procedure.

Perspectives

As a researcher and physician, this review highlights a critical but underserved area of care, and I enjoyed working with national experts and leaders on writing this review. The work this group does is inspiring and I am grateful to have been part of it.
