What is it about?
Spinal cord injury (SCI), a severe neurological disorder, is reported to be a major cause of paralysis and its morbidity reaches up to 1.4 million in America. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) exert functions in spinal cord injury (SCI). MiR-33-5p level is downregulated in the rats with SCI. We herein investigate the biological functions and underlying mechanisms of miR-33-5p.

Why is it important?
MiR-33-5p level was downregulated in SCI rats. MiR-33-5p upregulation alleviated the leakage of BSCB induced by SCI and improved neurological functions of SCI rats. MiR-33-5p bound to Rps6kb1 3’UTR. Rps6kb1 expression was upregulated after SCI. MiR-33-5p alleviates the LPS-induced cell apoptosis by targeting Rps6kb1
Perspectives
MiR-33-5p ameliorates SCI in rats and inhibits the LPS-induced apoptosis of PC12 cells.
