What is it about?

In this work, self-organizing maps (SOM) technique is applied to objective classification of the large-scale circulations before tropical cyclogenesis over the western North Pacific (WNP), followed by possible interpretations of the associated environmental conditions for cyclogenesis.

Why is it important?

Five large-scale circulation patterns favorable for WNP tropical cyclogenesis are obtained via objective classification. This work may help identify distinct synoptic patterns for tropical cyclogenesis and improve tropical cyclone formation forecast.
