What is it about?

Macrophages are innate immune cells that have diverse functions throughout the body. This diversity can be driven by metabolism and impacts health from wound healing to oncology to infectious disease. This paper provides the most comprehensive characterization to date of the gene expression, protein profile, and metabolism of these diverse cells.

Why is it important?

Because these cells have so many functional roles in health and disease throughout the body, this paper provides a foundational characterization that can drive better diagnostic and therapeutic strategies targeted at this cell type. In addition, this paper characterizes the metabolic adaptations that correlate to immune cell function, thus providing insight into how metabolism drives immunity.

Perspectives

While this article is foundational and provides insight into the integration of metabolism and function in macrophages, there is significantly more work to be done to better understand this correlation in vivo. We hope this article will inspire others to dig more deeply into this fascinating member of the innate immune family.
