What is it about?
Epithelial-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) carry iron-loaded ferritin. These EVs are recognized by macrophage membrane protein MSR1 (macrophage scavenger receptor 1) and internalized by macrophages. The internalization and its subsequent effects contribute to IBD.

Why is it important?
Blockage of the internalization mentioned above ameliates the inflammatory symptoms and likely benefits patients.
Perspectives
Fucoidan, a MSR1 inhibitor, can be combined with conventional therapy in clinical trials. It is also considered to have other immune benefits, making it worthy of a try.
