What is it about?

Intravenous catheters carry the risk of inflammation and thrombosis. Therefore, it is imperative that the catheters used in balloon therapy and stent placement are antibacterial and do not cause blood clotting. This study emphasises the coating of chitosan containing copper ions on silicon catheters. The effect of the coating on blood cells and its antibacterial properties were examined.

Why is it important?

In this study, we tried to coat a chitosan film containing different amounts of copper on the catheter for the first time. The central axis of the study was the prevention of blood coagulation of this biomedical material in contact with blood and the prevention of adhesion of blood cells to the catheter surface. In addition, its antibacterial properties were also emphasised. Everyone from the specialist doctor to the nurse, from the nurse to the patient, from the patient to the patient's relative, knows that blood coagulation is seen in the long-term use of catheters. Therefore, the effect of catheters on blood coagulation is an important issue.
