What is it about?

In this study, we aimed to determine the factors affecting innovation and sustainability by revealing the innovation and sustainability levels of paddy farms. We identified the innovations in paddy cultivation and grouped the farmers as low, medium and high innovative. We calculated sustainability indices for each farmer.

Why is it important?

In the research, the answer to which factors (socioeconomic and farm characteristics) are influential on the innovativeness and sustainability of paddy farmers was sought. We selected the paddy sector, and the Bafra district in terms of Bafra district is the most crucial in paddy production, and the Red River delta, one of Turkey's most extensive wetlands, is in the Bafra district. Red River Delta has critical biodiversity and is under UNESCO conservation. Also, The Red River Delta is adjacent to the areas where the paddy cultivation areas. Paddy cultivation is generally carried out in wetlands and intensive use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. The continuous increase in paddy cultivation areas threatens wetlands in the Red River Delta.
