What is it about?

Climacteric fruits continue to ripen after harvest and produce ethylene coupled with an increase in respiration rate, which contributes to more rapid perishability. The use of edible coating with the addition of nanoparticles has shown to be more effective in delaying ripening and extending the shelf life of climacteric fruits.

Why is it important?

In this review, it is important to note that nanoparticles such as chitosan nanoparticles are safe to be used as a coating on climacteric fruits. Also, plant extracts can serve as an edible coating to coat the fruits and extend their shelf life. The review summarizes recent findings on the application of edible coatings in the form of nanoparticles, and their effect on quality parameters and shelf life extension of climacteric fruits.

Perspectives

This review article opened my eye to see various opportunities of how we can work with other departments such as chemistry and food technology to formulate coatings suitable to be used in the fruits and food industry.
