What is it about?

For a bifacial PV module, optimizing orientation requires careful consideration of multiple factors making it more complex. Due to an absence of a proper standard for the installation, installation of bifacial PV modules is being carried out on a vertical orientation generally, which may not be suitable for every location. The complexity of irradiance models in the literature needed for optimization, hinders any relevant research, which may be conducted for the same. This novel research work provides an alternative approach for the very first time, to determine the optimum orientation through design of experiments (DoE), reducing the dependency on complex modelling, with the objective of maximizing module power output

Why is it important?

This study emphasizes the need to install a bifacial module at an orientation which enables greater energy generation, thus supplementing the pre-defined gains available by using a bifacial module in place of a monofacial photovoltaic module

Perspectives

The results show that the orientation determined in this manuscript provides greater yield as compared to the conventional orientations currently in use globally
