What is it about?
In this study, fractal electrodes for electrokinetic manipulation of micrometer-sized colloidal particles were introduced. Although nDEP was not observed in high-conductivity medium (PBS, 1.5 S/m) using plain electrodes, fractal electrodes exhibit strong nDEP response.

Why is it important?
According to the results of this study, usage of fractal electrodes could enable DEP researchers to design systems for capturing and separating cells in high-conductivity physiological media. The usage of fractal electrodes could also enable researchers to trap and separate nanometer-sized particles more efficiently, where the nonuniform electric fields in the 3D structure of the fractal electrodes can be used to manipulate nanoparticles.
