Surface treatment processes, such as painting of car bodies, have to meet ever increasing demands in terms of quality, cost savings and environmental compatibility. The efficient use of energy and water is becoming increasingly important.

Why is it important?
Water recycling with the help of bath maintenance measures is already being implemented in many paint shops. This paper shows that there is still further potential for water savings within the scope of extended process bath maintenance.
Perspectives
We hope that this article, despite the perhaps somewhat theoretical system view on selected innovative bath care technologies in the field of wet chemical pretreatment of paint shops will help our readers in the planning of new paint shops. It also shows how a waste water free operation mode, the so-called Zero-Liquid-Discharge (ZLD) is possible.
