What is it about?

There is evidence that teaching and rehabilitation strategies can help children with cochlear implants improve their listening and speaking abilities. We used two teaching methods, errorless procedures and equivalence-based instruction (EBI), and assessed how they helped children with cochlear implants understand and produce sentences.

Why is it important?

Six children with cochlear implants received errorless procedures and equivalence-based instruction involving structured subject-verb-object sentences. Their listening and speaking abilities were evaluated before and after the instruction. Our findings show that these children learned to understand and produce sentences through the use of these instructional procedures.

Perspectives

Teaching procedures can optimize language gains in populations with minimal verbal repertoires. This article demonstrates how instructional procedures can effectively promote sentence comprehension and production in children with cochlear implants.
